A while back a friend of mine told me that he was learning a new language using the Duolingo App, I simply thought he will get bored over time and drop the new language quest. Well, He has managed to learn Spanish using a free Account.


It is now absolutely easy and free to learn new languages all thanks to Duolingo

What is Duolingo?

It is a platform that offers you the chance to learn new languages for free. You can learn how to speak up to 24 languages online via the Duolingo app or the web and All you have to do is to create an account.

It also offers premium services for a fee for professionals who require personal mentoring. The platform provides its services on the web as well as on its mobile app.  It also offers an online proficiency assessment exam.

Currently, Duolingo App is the most popular language-learning platform and the most downloaded education app with over 300 million users in the world.

 Furthermore, it has shown no signs of slowing down after securing over $108 million in venture capital according to a recent survey.  Forbes estimates it to be worth $700 million.

They offer a wide range of languages including English, French, Dutch, Japanese, Greek, Spanish, Turkish and lots more. Duolingo uses a skill tree of lessons that include listening exercises, flashcards, and multiple-choice questions to you new words, phrases, and sentences.

It is feature more than just learning as it offers a community feature that connects you with other people who are learning the similar language you are.

Does Duolingo really work?

Truth be told, everyone one is really skeptical when it comes to language learning platforms. However, Duolingo offers you a chance to test their services for FREE. You are just required to create an account and you are good to go.

Prior to writing this post, I decided to get a feel of the Duolingo App and it offers amazing possibilities. Parents who want their kids to learn other languages such as French, Spanish and a host of other languages could easily signup the kids for their free services.

The lesson activities will require the kids to the type or select translations for missing words or listen to a word, phrase or sentence and type the translation among others.

The experience is fantastic because, despite the absence of games, they get your kids to compete with other users anonymously or find their friends via email.

To create an account is simple. You just have to follow a few steps via the Duolingo App or the web platform. You can sign up by either by using an email account or an existing Facebook or Google Account.

Follow these steps to sign up from the Duolingo App (available on Andriod and iOS platforms) or via the Web platform.

On Android Devices

Visit google play store and search for “Duolingo” to download the Duolingo App.

To create a new Duolingo Account, click on the “Get started” button and follow the instructions provided to create your profile.

If you already have an account, simply click “I already have an Account” and enter your username/email and password.

On iOS Devices

Simply visit the Apple App store to download the Duolingo App.

To create a new Duolingo Account, click on the “Get started” button and follow the instructions provided to create your profile.

If you already have a Duolingo account, Open the App and click “I already have an Account”.

Fill in your username/email and password to log in.

To create a Duolingo account through the web, visit www.duolingo.com and click on “Get Started” or www.duolingo.com/register

  • Click on the language you want to learn and choose your estimated daily goal and click on continue.
  • Simply follow the rest of the steps create your profile

Getting the Best Out of Duolingo App?

Surprisingly, Duolingo App is a very stable app and rarely crashes.

According to a review by one of the App users, The App only crashed twice in a space of 6 months.

The fact is, if you really want to learn a new language, you need to adopt a multi-pronged approach such as watching videos, reading newspaper or blogs in your target language.

Duolingo can help you reach attain a good level of fluency and competence, but you will have to take yourself the rest of the way.

You could actually try out other language learning apps and online course especially the free ones.

They can help you to test your fluency too.

Avoid learning from two or more Language Apps at the same time. 

It is also important that you speak your target language as much as possible. The Duolingo app includes a speech tool, so you can take advantage of it. You can also take advantage of their event page.
